A teacher at a high school at Thulamahashe in Mpumalanga was killed yesterday after he had allegedly held up employees of a petrol filling station at gunpoint and took cash from them.
The community was shocked when the well-known and popular teacher, Elone Sibuyi, in his 40s, was found dead two hours after the robbery with a gun next to him.
He was a teacher at Soshangana High School at Buyisonto village near Thulamahashe.
The dramatic robbery happened at Thulamahashe Excel petrol station in the morning.
The teacher was allegedly wearing a black balaclava when he allegedly held up the four garage employees at gunpoint at 4am.
"He instructed the employees to hand over all the cash in their tills and threatened to kill them with the 9mm firearm in his hands if they failed to cooperate," said Mopani police spokesman, Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe.
Sibuyi ran away as soon as the employees had handed him all the money they had and he allegedly fired two shots at a petrol pump, damaging it.
"That was extremely dangerous because it could easily have sparked a fire that could have burnt the entire shopping complex. We say thanks to God the Almighty because it never happened, only the pump is damaged," said the garage manager, Cecil Ngobeni.
A security guard who was hiding and closely watching the teacher during the robbery retaliated and fired several shots at Sibuyi while he was running away.
The matter was reported to the Mhala police, who had searched for the robber in vain.
But at about 6am when some of the garage staff arrived for work from areas such as Maphiti and Jazzville sections of Thulamahashe, they reported having seen a man lying dead next to a firearm 150m from the garage.
Also found lying next to the man's body was some of the money the teacher had allegedly robbed from the petrol station.
Ngobeni said he had been warned on several occasions before by police intelligence members about a possible robbery at his shop.
