FORMER Generations star, Deli Malinga has frozen her acting career to focus on youth development in Umlazi outside Durban.

Malinga, who portrayed the role of Sarah Ngcobo, Khaphela's wife, gives back to the community by empowering youth with performing arts skills.

The local actress who made it big in Johannesburgteaches youth acting, dance and singing for free at Victoria Mxenge Hall in the township. The aim is to impart performing arts skills, and keep those who are unemployed busy.

"It has always been my wish to plough back to the community that raised and supported me. My aim is to share with them what I have learnt in the acting industry," she says.

The course highlights the challenges in the field since many young people take acting as an easy ride. Malinga says since the youngsters joined her, most have changed they perception about it.

"The aim is to show young people that the entertainment industry is not as glamorous as it looks. It requires hard work."

Malinga started last year with 39 unemployed youth, however this year, she wants to work more with children as young as 12.

Her current challenge is lack of financial support. She has been knocking at the doors of various departments of the KwaZulu-Natal government without success.

Despite struggling with funds, she would not throw in the towel, that is why she still holds auditions for young people at the hall.

"I have even tried to get food sponsor for the kids because most of them come from disadvantaged homes with no luck."
