Every wine has a story to tell

IT IS no exaggeration that every wine has, so to speak, a story to tell.

Be it the events that culminated in its being or other challenges, such as the weather in the vineyards or other unwieldy elements in the cellar, they are all part of the sum that eventually becomes the wine in one's glass.

For many decades the story of Casillero del Diablo has captivated wine lovers all overt the world.

Casillero del Diablo is something of an aristocrat of Chilean wines with a history going back many decades.

The story behind it is that its owner, faced with the constant theft of wines, concocted an urban legend that his private cellar was haunted by the devil to dissuade the local villagers from plundering his collection.

Apart from causing the villagers' hair to stand on its end, the story also killed off their appetite for freeloading his wines. Fortunately wine lovers who will be visiting the Wine Show Joburg at the Coca-Cola Dome from August 5 to 7 can enjoy the Chilean wines without fearing any hair-raising spell.

Casillero del Diablo, reputed to be the fifth biggest producer of wine in the world, is now selling in the country. There is the premium range Casillero del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Carmenere (R75) and its less pricey Frontera (R39) counterpart.

Visitors can also look out for the iconic Kaapse Vonkel Brut, South Africa's first methode cap classique wine made in the style of French champagne.

Its elegance complimented by fine crisp bubbles and yeasty mouth-filling roundness are characteristics that have assured it the pride of place among local wine lovers in the past 40 years.

To cap their experience, the royalty of local port will be available in the form of De Krans, either tawny, ruby, vintage reserve and cape vintage.

Though winter is on its last legs, fortified wines are still the rave for warming the cockles of one's heart.

Tickets are available from R90 a person to R150 for weekend passes.

Meanwhile, the City of Tshwane will host the Afro Lounge Tshwane Wine Festival tomorrow night, where 40 wine exhibitors will be showcasing over 100 wine brands.

Wine lovers will sip to the DJ sounds of Bob Mabena and Thabo Mokwele, at what will become the annual event which is sponsored this year by Douglas Green Bellingham, Meridian Wines, Distell and Makro.

There will be food and wine at the venue (Afro Lounge Kitchen Bar) which is a restaurant and cocktail lounge with private dining and lounge areas.

The restaurant is situated at The SA State Theatre, corner Church and Prinsloo streets, Pretoria. It starts at 6pm and entry is R100.
