Safety permit for Gautrain

A SAFETY permit has been issued to Gautrain's Bombela Operating Company to operate the routes between Park Station and Hatfield, as well as Sandton to OR Tambo International, the Railway Safety Regulator said

"The Bombela Operating Company (BOC) has satisfied the regulator that rigorous safety testing and trial runs have been successfully completed, and that all the required safety measures are in place to enable the transportation of passengers," spokesperson for the regulator Lavinia Engelbrecht said.

The regulator has been working closely with Bombela since 2007 to ensure the safe completion and operation of the Gautrain rapid rail project, Engelbrecht said.

The regulator has been involved in areas of design, construction and testing and commissioning by conducting safety reviews, assessments and inspections on all safety aspects.

It also issued safety permits for the operation of construction trains, as well as for the testing and commissioning phases.

Through this it ensured the project would operate safely once introduced.

The provincial government must now determine contractually with Bombela which portion of the network would be introduced and when.

Last month the regulator said that since the BOC took charge of the system in March to conduct tests, there had been some snags.

"The RSR observes that as expected with a new system of this magnitude, a number of snags emerged during this 'settling in' period.

"These have been systematically addressed by BOC and its partners," said Engelbrecht.

The RSR said the operator had co-operated fully during this phase.
