Top lifetime honour for Albertina Sisulu

ALBERTINA Sisulu has received the 2010 Public Excellence Lifetime Award for her distinguished public service.

Sisulu received the award during the Public Sector Excellence Award function at the Sandton Sun Hotel last night.

The award honours leading retired South Africans' lifetime career accomplishments and direct and indirect contributions to the public service.

Sisulu met the strict criterion of someone recognised as a living role model who had made a selfless contribution to serving the public.

The SA Revenue Service scooped the Public Sector Excellence Grand Prix Platinum Award for the second year as the state- owned entity with the best overall reputation.

The Public Sector Excellence Awards are an independent assessment and celebration of excellence in the public service as voted by the citizens.

The survey was conducted by TNS Research Surveys and gathered opinions from South Africans, covering metropolitan, smaller urban and rural areas.

It gives ordinary South Africans an opportunity to rate the performance of government, its agencies and state-owned entities over the past 12 months.

"The results of the PSX Reputation Index are clear indication of what people think of the performance of public entities, their policies and delivery against their mandate, and are a clear barometer for service delivery excellence," said Thebe Ikalafeng, founder of the PSX initiative.

The Department of Health was honoured with a PSG Grand Prix Platinum Award for its HIV-Aids awareness campaign.

In addition to the Grand Prix Award, Sars also won four other Gold Awards for overall effectiveness, service orientation and sector brand leadership, making it the top performer in 2010.

The Department of Social Development received five awards in the categories of overall effectiveness and service orientation.
