Prison overcrowding must be fixed

PRISON overcrowding should be a priority for Minster of Correctional Services S'bu Ndebele. He must come up with long-term solutions.

More money for more cells is not by itself a viable solution.

Prison overcrowding is sometimes caused by a slow court system that increases the number of remand and unsentenced prisoners.

New strategies must be considered regarding the mobility of judges to reduce awaiting-trial periods and assist in eliminating overcrowding . Three or four years ago there was no overcrowding in our correctional centres.
