12 rape accused amongst the 1‚098 people arrested in weekend clampdown

Ten robbers‚ 12 rape accused ‚ 31 house burglars and 92 thieves may be off the streets of Gauteng if police manage to gain convictions following the arrests made by officers this weekend.

SAPS Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said crime prevention operations were conducted by the police‚ Metro police and Gauteng Traffic officers at the weekend‚ resulting in a total of 1‚098 arrests for various crimes including possession of drugs‚ driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs‚ housebreaking and theft‚ assault‚ malicious damage to property and illegal immigration‚ as well as the seizure of illicit goods.

Items confiscated included:

- More than a million litres (1‚680‚112) of alcohol

- 6‚245 grams of drugs including dagga and methcathinone (CAT)‚

- Eighteen (18) firearms.

 The suspects arrested at the weekend are due to appear at the various Magistrates’ Courts today. In addition to the armed robbery‚ rape and theft cases‚ the other arrests include: 135 for assault cases‚ 77 people for being in possession of drugs‚ 154 for illegal immigration and 15 for possession of stolen property. Arrests were also made for fraud‚ illegal dealing in liquor and offences such as driving without a driver’s licence‚ and reckless/negligent driving.
