The body of a 10-year-old child who drowned on Saturday was recovered on the ocean floor following a massive search and rescue operation by police and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) at Paternoster, in the Western Cape.
The NSRI’s Craig Lambinon said they were called at 12:45 on Saturday to assist the police who were searching for the missing boy in the surf at Paternoster’s main beach.
NSRI rescue swimmers were deployed into the surf, and found the body of the child on the ocean floor, 400 metres offshore.
Lambinon said the body was brought to shore aboard their sea rescue craft.
Police have opened an inquest docket.
Meanwhile, Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk on Sunday said there were no new developments in the search for a 10-year-old boy who went missing off Clifton beach in Cape Town on Friday afternoon. Van Wyk said the search was still continuing.
News24 earlier reported that police divers and a helicopter had been sent to the scene.
