A friend of former crime intelligence boss Richard Mdluli’s ex-lover has said that the police never followed up on two complaints she laid in which Mdluli was implicated.

Testifying against Mdluli and his co-accused‚ former policeman Mthembeni Mthunzi‚ on Thursday‚ Alice Manana recalled how she and Oupa Ramogibe were assaulted by men she identified as “Siluale” and “Killer”.

According to the indictment‚ Mthunzi changed his name legally from Mahlatini Johannes Siluale.

Mdluli and Mthunzi are on trial in the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg for charges relating to the death in 1999 of Ramogibe‚ who was married to Mdluli’s former girlfriend Tshidi Buthelezi.

The charges against them include the intimidation‚ assault and kidnapping of Manana.

They have pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

On Wednesday‚ Manana told the court that in August 1998‚ Mdluli and Mthunzi staged her arrest in order to aid them in finding Buthelezi‚ who was her friend since they were students. Manana said she eventually led them and two other men to Buthelezi and Ramogibe.

Manana on Thursday said she and Ramogibe were assaulted when Mdluli‚ Killer and Siluale took them to the Boksburg police station.

She said she was slapped in the face after she asked how she was involved in the matter involving Buthelezi‚ Ramogibe and Mdluli. When she tried to ward off the blows‚ she was hit in the back.

According to Manana‚ one of the men said: “This b***h is disrespectful.”

She said she woke up the next day bleeding from her ear and with bruises on her back.

“I decided to go to Dawn Park police station to lay a charge. I was attended to by Mr Israel. I do not know what his rank was‚” said Manana.

She said Israel said he would bring her the case number later‚ but he never did.

She said she went to the police station again in 1999 to lay another charge after being shot at.

Although she could not identify the person who shot her‚ Manana said she told Israel that her shooter was travelling in a car she identified as Mdluli’s.

“Mr Israel took down my statement and promised me again that he would bring the case number to me‚ but he never did.”

Manana said she stopped following up on the charges after her family told her that she could get into trouble.
