A 32-year-old man was shot and killed in KwaMakhutha, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday.

His body was found in the morning, with a bullet wound in the head, Colonel Jay Naicker said.

The motive for the killing was still unknown and no arrests had been made.

The SA Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) said the man was a security guard at the Makhutha High School.

"Sadtu KwaZulu-Natal is very much disturbed by the news that a worker was killed last night [Monday] in Makhutha High," provincial secretary Nomarashiya Caluza said.

Caluza said the man had been working night shift. She said the union had been raising concerns about safety in schools, including the safety of security guards.

"The department [of education] must realise that the country is faced with a high level of crime and schools, as bearers of various valuable resources, are now targets for robbery and thuggery. Therefore there is a need for the provision of tight security in all schools," she said.
