READING IS EMPOWERING: Singer Kelly Khumalo spearheads a new reading campaign for youngsters.

PHYSICAL abuse survivor Kelly Khumalo, whose experiences are documented in her book The Kelly Khumalo Story, is on a mission to share her knowledge with the youth.

Speaking to a group of youngsters at the Temba community hall in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, she said she was dedicated to the Dare to Dream initiative because she wants to "inspire and encourage the youth" to read as a form of self-empowerment.

"It does not matter what industry you end up in, life has the good and the ugly and you have a choice to choose life when death comes knocking on your door," she told the youth.

The event was part of the educational campaign Dare to Dream.

Campaign founder Paul Modjadji said the initiative seeks to encourage young people, especially those who may not have the resources to study at a university, to use readily available books to help them build careers for themselves.

Said Khumalo: "Though there are a lot of books that are now being adapted into films, when you read a book and then watch a film based on it you soon realise that words can take you beyond just the action."

City of Tshwane executive Andries Malatsi said cultivating a culture of reading is an important nation-building objective and that the municipality would support future such workshops.

The singer also urged the youth to stay strong when facing challenges as there were life lessons to be learnt with every incident.

"I have learnt that we do not go through struggles for nothing; there is a lesson in every situation," Khumalo said.
