Dewani trial to hear from doctor and alleged killer

The alleged killer of tourist Anni Dewani and his doctor are expected to take to the stand in the High Court in Cape Town this week.

Speaking after the State had wrapped up its case on Wednesday, lawyer Qalisile Dayimani said his client Xolile Mngeni, 25, a doctor and a third unnamed witness would testify.

The doctor is expected to present clinical notes on an injury Mngeni sustained to his left hand in 2009.

The lawyer argued at the time that without the full use of his hand, it would have been impossible for Mngeni to fire a gun.

Mngeni has pleaded not guilty to robbing, kidnapping and murdering Dewani in Gugulethu on November 13, 2010, while she was on honeymoon with her husband Shrien.

Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Adrian Mopp said at the last court date that the court needed to know details of the doctor’s qualifications.

Mngeni has claimed his alleged accomplice Mziwamadoda Qwabe, who has taken a plea agreement in which he was jailed for 25 years, shot Dewani.   According to Qwabe, however, Mngeni was the triggerman.
