Alternative plan for Umyezo

THE Western Cape department of education has said it is making suitable alternative arrangements for Grade 11 and 12 pupils at Umyezo Wama Apile Combined School in Grabouw in a bid to resolve overcrowding at the school.

The situation led to racial clashes three weeks ago.

The department plans to erect a temporary facility to house extra pupils, but parents and community leaders are opposed to the plan.

At the centre of the conflict is the choice of site where the department had sought to build the temporary facility.

Bronagh Casey, spokesperson for education MEC Donald Grant, said the department was aware of complaints regarding the installation of mobile classrooms.

Community leaders and parents claim the site was a "wetland".

Yesterday Casey said: "We have not yet decided on which site we will build the temporary school ... We were informed that the site owned by the Theewaterskloof Municipality is available."

Casey added that their main priority was to stabilise the school environment so that teaching and learning could resume as soon as possible.
