Three held over murder

THREE people have been arrested over the gruesome death of a man who was killed in Freedom Park informal settlement near Eldorado Park, southern Johannesburg, last week.

Sowetan reported on the killing of Nkosinathi Mokonyana, 39, whose body was found dumped on a hill a few metres from his girlfriend's house last Wednesday.

Mokonyana's eyes were gouged out. His left ear and nose were also missing.

In a new development, according to police spokesman Captain Pinky Tsinyane two male suspects who had been taken in for questioning, had now been arrested and a third female suspect was arrested at the weekend.

Mokonyana's girlfriend, Eunice Mthembu, also aged 39, said he left her house on Tuesday with one of the suspects and did not return. She tried calling him but his cellphone was off. She said she was told about her boyfriend's death by community members who had found his body at 8.30am the following day.

The community has expressed outraged over the killing. They have called for the forced removal of one of the suspects from his home since he was the last person to have been seen with the deceased.

Tsinyane said the matter was still under investigation.

The suspects will appear at Protea Magistrate's Court in Soweto on Friday.
