'Let's debate ANC succession'

GAUTENG ANC chairperson Paul Mashatile has endorsed a call for a succession debate within the party, saying this was already happening outside its discourse.

It was unfair that ANC members became onlookers while the debate continued, he told journalists at the party's provincial general council in Centurion.

"Our call to our PGC is: we need, as we prepare to go to Mangaung [for the ANC's elective conference in 2012], to begin a disciplined discussion on these issues," he said.

Mashatile said the Youth League had been leading the debate, and was vocal about who it wanted to lead the organisation.

It was no secret that the ANCYL wanted Arts and Culture Minister Fikile Mbalula to replace Gwede Mantashe as ANC general secretary in 2012.

He said ANC members should be free to discuss the leadership issue in the party's structures.
