Santos can close in on United

SECOND-PLACED Santos are quietly launching an assault on the PSL and they have a chance to put pressure on league leaders SuperSport United when they host BidVest Wits at Coetzenburg Stadium tomorrow night.

The People's Team are three points adrift of United and a win against the Students would see them increase the heat on Matsatsantsa, who are the defending champions.

Santos have been making steady progress since coach Boebie "Mzala" Solomons took over the reins from David Bright and they have managed to bag six goals from their last three matches.

Solomons said Santos have a clean bill of health for tomorrow's tie.

"We don't have any injuries going into this match," he said.

"The problem is that we are playing too many matches in a short period and we have little time to prepare for the next match. Obviously the players find it difficult under these conditions."

He said it was too early to talk about winning the championship. "We are taking each game as it comes and we are not resting on our laurels. We have not even finished the first half of the season but our objective is to finish in the top eight," he said, adding that all his players have the ability to win him the game against Wits.

The Students are going througha bad patch after failing to win their last four matches.

Wits coach Roger De Sa believes the trip to Western Cape will not be easy.

"It's going to be tough against Santos since they are very defensive and rely on counter-attacks, but one must be very patient when playing against such a side," De Sa said yesterday.

He also labelled the critics who say Wits always fade when it matters most as "ignorant".

Solomons will rely on Erwin Isaacs, who scored a brace when they beat AmaZulu 2-0 on Sunday.

The visitors will rely on top scorer Calvin "Dolezar" Kadi to win this clash, which kicks off at 7.30pm.
