Youth groups warn business
YOUTH organisations aligned to the ANC have continued their attack on Nedbank and other local corporates for not sponsoring African athletes despite their international successes.
The Progressive Youth Alliance - made up of the ANC Youth League, the Young Communist League and the SA Students' Congress - said yesterday that Nedbank's position "would not be without consequences".
"The withdrawal of Nedbank as a sponsor for ASA affirms the intransigent attitude that still prevails in lily-white corporate SA.
"The PYA calls on Nedbank to reconsider its position as it raises questions about their commitment to transformation and empowerment.
"The PYA wonders if the same attitude would prevail in a case of a white athlete or the rugby team?"
The organisations accused the private sector of using the debacle involving ASA boss Leonard Chuene as an excuse to withdraw sponsorship.
Meanwhile ANC Youth League president Julius Malema is expected to continue his attack on Nedbank when he addresses the Black Management Forum Conference today.
