MEC takes all by surprise with secretary appointment

LIMPOPO MEC for health and social development Miriam Segabutla has appointed an individual from the opposition DA as her secretary in a move that took everybody by surprise.

LIMPOPO MEC for health and social development Miriam Segabutla has appointed an individual from the opposition DA as her secretary in a move that took everybody by surprise.

Segabutla has employed Suzan Raath who is an active member of the DA.

Traditionally secretaries are regarded as close confidantes of the incumbent MEC.

To make matters worse, Raath is allegedly not in possession of a matric certificate.

When the post was advertised, it was stipulated that candidateswith a matric and a three-year post-matric qualification would be considered.

Sources in the department said yesterday Segabutla shocked everybody, including senior officials in the human resources unit, when she recommended Raath's appointment.

In her position, Raath will earn more than R400000 a year, and other benefits.

She started in her new position on September 1.

Known as Limpopo's queen of bliss in political circles, Segabutla also allegedly instructed Raath to stop Abel Matsemela, the department's parliamentary officer and acting secretary, from entering her office while she was away.

She allegedly said she did not trust Matsemela anymore.

This despite the fact that Matsemela is believed to have done a good job during the tenure of former MEC Seaparo Sekoati.

Segabutla also allegedly instructed that a wooden floor be installed in her office because, as it was said, she could not stand using a floor used by her predecessor.

She was in the news recently after allegedly ordering the purchase of a second official car, which she later withdrew.

Departmental spokesperson Selby Makgotho yesterday promised to respond but had not done so at the time of printing.
