Funeka, Bungu and Mnguni all belong in jail

Boxing manager Sihle Mnguni, trainer Vuyani Bungu and boxer Ali Funeka deserve severe punishment, or even imprisonment, for breaking rules and regulations that govern Boxing South Africa (BSA).

Boxing manager Sihle Mnguni, trainer Vuyani Bungu and boxer Ali Funeka deserve severe punishment, or even imprisonment, for breaking rules and regulations that govern Boxing South Africa (BSA).

This body is governed by an act of Parliament. So, failing to abide by it simply means a crime has been committed.

They all failed to provide BSA with a copy of Funeka's fight contract from US promoter Don King.

Since they did not do that, their departure for the US was illegal. They were not cleared by BSA.

Sihle did not go abroad, instead his elder brother Mzimase Mnguni did.

Now one wonders how the Florida State Athletic Commission, the IBF and WBO allowed Funeka to fight?

The assumption is that Funeka and Bungu must have produced "something" but from where?

This is how it works - a promoter outside SA who wishes to engage a local fighter over there, must first match that boxer and then if all is well (agree on terms and conditions); then he must send a contract to the local boxer, who after signing it must take it to the governing body for clearance.

In fact this involves his trainer, manager and second. On their arrival, they must produce their clearances during the pre-fight medical - proof that they were indeed cleared back home.

Fathers of this sport tell me that in no uncertain terms will a boxer be allowed to climb on the scale in another country without first producing a clearance.

Now Funeka, Mnguni and Bungu must have produced pieces of paper to convince the IBF and WBO, as well as the Florida Athletic State Commission, that the South Africans had received the blessings of the BSA.

Remember when Anthony "Blue Jaguar" Morodi and trainer Theo Mthembu were banned for 12 months by the SA National Boxing Control Board for fighting in Mexico without the board's consent? The same must happen to Mnguni, Bungu and Funeka.

I take my leave.
