Good and bad news for teachers
Good news for some teachers working in the rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal is that the provincial department of education is in the final stages of implementing the payment of the rural allowances.
But teacher unions are not jumping for joy. They allege that the department has categorised schools incorrectly so that fewer than expected teachers qualify for the allowances.
Provincial education spokesman Mbali Thusi said in terms of policy the payment of incentives to educators is dependent on fulfilling set criteria, which includes remoteness (of the school), poverty (quintile ranking) and scarcity of the subject taught and-or difficulty in the recruitment of teachers to the area or subject.
She said the provinces had to identify the schools that would benefit and this was a lengthy process.
Sadtu provincial secretary Sipho Nkosi said: "We were surprised to find that the number of teacher's to benefit is way less than what is really needed."
