TEACHERS ON ASSAULT RAP
Three male teachers who allegedly assaulted a pupil, kicking her in her private parts until she bled, have appeared in court.
They are Mohale Mopai, 53, Kingscorn Maepa, 28, and Josies Lediga, 40, from Kgapane High School in Bolobedu, near Modjadjiskloof, Limpopo.
They allegedly assaulted a 15-year-old Grade 9 pupil at the school, last Thursday.
Police spokesman, Freddy Maenetja, said the teachers allegedly assaulted the girl because she did not read well.
The pupil, who was taking part in a group discussion, was told by her teacher, Mopai, to read some of the resolutions.
"The girl failed to read properly and the teacher reprimanded her and called her names," Maenetja said yesterday.
"He allegedly held her by her hair and dragged her to the staff room where the other teachers took turns in assaulting her.
"They allegedly assaulted and kicked her between her legs before ordering her to leave the school.''
A group of pupils who saw their classmate struggling to walk took her to her mother who opened an assault case against the teachers.
According to the medical report, she had lost a lot of blood during the assault.
The pupil said: "I am always bleeding since the incident. Every time I try to walk or urinate, I bleed."
She said she was, however, hoping to be well in time for her trial exams this week.
According to police records, the school is a high-risk school where contact crimes such as assault, the use of drugs, theft and the possession of knives and firearms were prevalent.
Education department spokesman Ndo Mangala said corporal punishment was outlawed and that anyone who practises it violates the department's policy. He said the department viewed the matter in a serious light and undertook to investigate.
The teachers appeared in the Bolobedu magistrate's court on Thursday.
They are out on R500 bail each. Their case will be heard again tomorrow.
