Vosloorus through to cup quarters
Vosloorus Newcastle United earned a berth in the maiden Coca-Cola Shanduka tournament quarterfinals despite their 2-2 draw against a 10-man Epsilon in KwaThema at the weekend.
Epsilon striker Vala Manzingare was shown a red card by referee Thembile Qobongo for using abusive language in the 60th minute.
United could not capitalise on their numerical superiority but went through to the quarters after topping their stream. They will be joined in the quarterfinals in Vosloorus on August 3 by second-placed New Era Santos.
The game was equally balanced throughout, but United led 1-0 at the interval thanks to Thabiso Sithole's rasping drive in the 36th minute.
Four minutes into the second half Epsilon midfielder Sizwe Madlala levelled matters with a close-range strike.
United regained their lead in the 60th minute through Sifiso Xinti but Sipho Phiri of Epsilon equalised in the 78th minute.
The weekend's matches marked the last stage of the elimination rounds. Other qualifiers are Disco Birds and Sporting (Stream A); Nigel Stars and City Stars (Stream B); Movers and Valencia (Stream C).
l Scorpion FC edged Mighty Bucks 4-2 on penalties at Emjindini Stadium in Barberton on Sunday to advance to the semifinal of the Lemmer and Kie Top-16 tournament.
Scorpion will meet Inyoka Beyihlohla in the semifinal at the same venue at 1pm on Sunday.
