Three women suspected of being involved in a rent an identity document scam are expected to appear in the Durban magistrate's court today.

Two of the women were arrested while trying to buy a cellphone with a fake ID at an Autopage Cellular outlet at Gamecity in Greyville on Thursday.

Staff at the shop called the police when they suspected there was something wrong with the ID.

The women were arrested at the shop.

Investigations led police to another woman who allegedly supplied the women with the fake documents.

The woman was arrested at her house in Umlazi where more fraudulent ID documents were found.

It is believed the women took out contract phones with the fraudulent IDs and sold them to Nigerians living in the Point area on the beachfront.

The woman was charged with being in possession of fraudulent documents and for supplying the two women with fraudulent IDs.

It is alleged the woman confessed to the police that she was working with Nigerians who she supplied with fake IDs and charged between R100 and R500 for the fake documents.

The fraudulent documents are also used for applying for loans. The Durban central police who said they were aware of the scam have warned cellular phone dealers in the city about the syndicate.

Police spokesman Bala Naidoo said yesterday the women would appear in court today.
