Everyone has self-esteem, but only a small percentage of people have high self-esteem.

The three main aspects of self-esteem are our feelings about ourselves, about life and our relationships.

With high self-esteem, we accept ourselves unconditionally and appreciate our value. But with low self-esteem, we think we have little intrinsic worth.

On our feelings about life, with high self-esteem we accept responsibility for and have a feeling of control over our lives. With low self-esteem, our lives often seem out of control.

On our relationships, with high self-esteem we have a tolerance of and respect for people and believe that they are entitled to the same rights as us. With low self-esteem, we lack basic respect for others, are intolerant of people and believe they should live the way we want them to.

Children who feel good about themselves find it easier to handle conflicts and resist negative pressures. They smile more , enjoy life, are realistic and optimistic. But those with a low self-esteem are anxious and frustrated. Such children might become passive, withdrawn or depressed.
