Mpumalanga's Health and Social Services Department is encouraging the people of the province to foster or adopt children.
As part of national Child Protection Day, the department has targeted more than 300 households in Standerton.
Activities will focus on highlighting child development and early childhood development.
Department spokesman Mpho Gabashane said needy children have been identified through home-based care- givers.
"Most of the children are orphans and we cannot trace the parents of the others," Gabashane said
