Nedbank and 94.7 Highveld Stereo handed over a R50000 cheque to the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) last week.

The money was raised during the third yearly Shavathon fundraising event that took place in more than 60 shopping centres in the country early last month.

The association's chief executive, Sue Janse van Rensburg, said: "Cansa's mission is important. And we cannot do the job alone."

Mark Pilgrim, a presenter on the radio station, thanked his listeners for their contribution.

Shavathon is Cansa's biggest fund-raiser and it creates national awareness of the work the association does in communities throughout the country.

The event raises awareness of the disease that affects one in four South Africans.

Funds raised are for prevention programmes, patient-care services and research purposes.
