Recognition awaits Community Builder of Year at gala event
Five top spots will be up for grabs when the Community Builder of the Year gala takes place at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg on Friday.
These awards - sponsored and organised by Sowetan, Old Mutual, the SABC and the nine provincial social development departments - are among the the 11 nation-building projects conceived by the late Sowetan editor- in-chief Aggrey Klaaste in 1991. Sowetan's nation-building philosophy was launched in 1988.
The social services departments provide coordinators in each province to help with all the provincial activities of the project.
At the gala 12 finalists - three each from the youth, adult, senior and group categories - will vie for the four top spots, plus the overall winner's award.
The 12 finalists were first announced exclusively on the popular community SABC2 empowerment show Motswakoin September. Actress Carol Bouwer and actor Hlomla Dandala will compere the awards.
Television personalities Patrick Shai, Mapaseka Mokwele, Caroline Jacobs and Dingaan Mokebe have joined the awards as celebrity champions.
Shai will act for the senior category, Mokwele for the adult section, Mokebe for the youth band and Jacobs as celebrity champion of the group category.
