Robin Petersen confirmed as new Safa CEO

Safa tell new boss of South African soccer - who was in charge during the Ellis Park tragedy - to make national teams competitive

As reported by Sowetan LIVE earlier, the  South African Football Association (Safa) on  Tuesday unveiled Reverend Robin Petersen as its chief executive officer.

Petersen will start on Monday.

The announcement was made by Safa president Kirsten Nematandani at a media briefing in Rosebank, Johannesburg.

Some of the Safa bosses present at the announcement included Mandla “Shoes” Mazibuko, Alpha Mchunu, Danny Jordaan and Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana.

“We are delighted to announce that Dr Robin Petersen is the new chief executive officer of Safa. He has accepted a three-year contract to serve us,” said Nematandani.

“He is the right man for the job to take Safa to greater heights.

“One of the things we asked from him is to make our national teams competitive.

“He will also focus on development and also enhance the international profile of South African football,” said Nematandani.

He also thanked Pinky “Sister Boss” Lehoko for holding the fort as acting CEO while the search for a permanent Safa head of administration  was under way.

Businessman Petersen replaces Leslie Sedibe, who quit the mother body in February. Pinky Lehoko was acting CEO in the interim.

Petersen said: “It is a great honour to have been appointed Safa CEO, I’m happy to be back in football administration after such a long time”.

Peterson's rise to soccer administration stardom started in 2001 when he succeeded Joe Ndlela as PSL CEO but his tenure didn't last. He resigned in the aftermath of the Ellis Park Stadium tragedy in which 43 people died and 158 were injured.
