Cape Town City have asked the Premier Soccer League to step in after left-back Lehlohonolo Nonyane began training with Lamontville Golden Arrows while still contracted to the new top-flight franchise.

Nonyane was one of the players that City inherited in their deal to buy the PSL status of Mpumalanga Black Aces at the end of last season.

But the 29-year-old was not interested in relocating to Cape Town and‚ despite City still paying his salary‚ has been training with Golden Arrows.

“Nonyane has got a contract still with the club‚” City owner John Comitis said on Thursday.

“We‚ under the law of this country‚ are obliged to honour every contract that was in place when we took over and we have done so. We paid him his salary in June like every other player.

“Unfortunately he said he doesn’t want to come to Cape Town‚ saying he doesn’t want to relocate.

"Subsequently we hear he is training with a club in Durban‚ which is wrong‚ both from the side of the club‚ and from the side of himself‚ knowing full well that you cannot just go and train with another club when you’ve got a contract.”

Comitis says he tried to discuss the issue with the player but received no joy.

“I tried on four different occasions to meet with him and give him a fair chance to see if there was anything we could do to keep him in Cape Town. He did not give me that opportunity.

“There is a process and a procedure in place. We cannot speak any more about it because there is a process in place with the PSL to deal with the matter. We have to wait for that process to be finalised.”

Golden Arrows refused to comment on the matter when contacted by Times Media Digital.
