Cape Town City have confirmed two more signings ahead of the new season‚ including another player from Australia in attacking midfielder James Brown.
Brown is an Australia junior international‚ though the 26-year-old has seen his career stall in the last few seasons and is looing for a fresh start in the Premier Soccer League.
He made just a single appearance for A-League side Melbourne City last season‚ having joined the club in 2014 from Newcastle Jets.
He spent seven seasons in all in Australia’s top division having also played with Gold Coast United.
In all he made 82 appearances in that time.
“Brown is another addition of an extremely attacking player‚ who offers plenty of versatility and creativity. He had the privilege of playing for Melbourne City‚ so his experience and his speed will be a big asset for the team‚” City owner John Comitis said.
Brown joins compatriot Matt Sims at the new Cape Town franchise‚ while the club has also signed Austrian midfielder Roland Putsche and Latvian defender Renard Rode as they look outside of Africa to fill their foreign quota.
Meanwhile‚ coach Eric Tinkler has also decided to bring young goalkeeper Samora Motloung from former club Orlando Pirates to provide cover for number one Shu-Aib Walters‚ though he could start in City’s season opener against Polokwane City as the latter is suspended.
Motloung arrives as part of the deal that saw Jackson Mabokgwane move in the opposite direction.
“Samora is a very special player‚” Comitis says.
“After having won Under-19 Copa Amsterdam Goalkeeper of the Tournament a few years back and then subsequently not making the first team at Ajax Cape Town‚ I was glad he finally managed to secure himself a contract at Orlando Pirates.
“When Jackson Mabogkwane was favoured to be the number one keeper of Pirates‚ we didn’t hesitate to request Pirates to sell us Samora to bring him back to Cape Town‚ especially because he’s from Khayelitsha.”
The 21-year-old spent part of last season on loan at Cape Town All Stars‚ where he made eight appearances for the club.
He has previously played at FC Cape Town in the 2013/14 season‚ having also been on the books of Ajax Cape Town as a junior.
Other players to have been signed by City include Tshepo Gumede (Orlando Pirates)‚ Shaquille Abrahams (FC Cape Town)‚ Duncan Adonis (Ramblers)‚ Never Ngcuka (Cape United) and Ebrahim Seedat (Milano United).
City are still assessing former Pirates defender Robyn Johannes‚ but have ruled out moves for so-called ‘big-name’ players being touted around the PSL by The Buccaneers‚ such as Sifiso Myeni and Lehlohonolo Majoro amid concerns over their wage demands.
