Itumeleng Khune on the cusp of new Kaizer Chiefs record

Itumeleng Khune could set a new Kaizer Chiefs record tonight by becoming the most capped player in the club’s history.

Khune will earn an 81st cap for Bafana Bafana if he comes on against Ghana in their friendly international in Durban‚ with Orlando Pirates gloveman Brighton Mhlongo having been named as a starter for his first international cap.

Should Khune make it onto the pitch he will break the record he currently shares with stalwart Siphiwe Tshabalala‚ who also managed 80 caps while in the colours of AmaKhosi.

Tshabalala‚ who famously scored South Africa’s opening goal at the 2010 FIFA World Cup with a thunderbolt against Mexico‚ has 88 caps in total‚ but eight of those came while in the colours of former club Free State Stars.

Khune was in masterful form in the 1-1 World Cup qualifier draw in Burkina Faso on Saturday‚ saving a penalty from Jonathan Pitroipa among a number of world-class stops. He also watched another penalty from Amand Traore sail over his crossbar.

The 29-year-old‚ who is already the most capped goalkeeper in South African history‚ will not set his sights on the all-time national team caps record of Aaron Mokoena‚ who sits on 107.

Ventersdorp-born Khune made his debut for Chiefs in the 2007/08 season and made his national team bow that same campaign in a 2-1 victory over Zimbabwe.

He almost immediately established himself as the country’s number one and has remained so ever since.

He would likely have passed 100 caps by now were it not for various bouts of long-term injury that kept him sidelined over the past few seasons.

Khune represented South Africa at the 2010 World Cup on home soil‚ but ewas sent-off in the second match‚ a 3-0 loss to Uruguay.

He also played in the 2013 African Nations Cup finals‚ as well as the 2015 African Nations Championships‚ both of which were hosted in South Africa.
