Kaizer Chiefs head coach Steve Komphela deserves more time, the club's former striker, Pollen "Trompies" Ndlanya, feels.

Ndlanya, pictured, told Sowetan yesterday that Komphela, who is becoming increasingly embattled, is still the right man for the job.

Chiefs have lost two cup finals - the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout - since Komphela took over from Stuart Baxter at the beginning of the season. They were also knocked out of the Nedbank Cup in the round of 32 by their arch-rivals Orlando Pirates at the weekend.

They look set to finish the season empty-handed as they are 13 points behind the log leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns.

Ndlanya, however, believes Komphela has done well in his first season in charge, pointing the finger at his players.

"I'm not the kind of person to criticise coaches and at the end of the day, the players have the responsibility. I think, without mentioning any names, there are still a lot of players at Chiefs who have to work harder," he said.

"You cannot blame Steve if players are not putting the ball in the net.

"I have watched all the Chiefs games and they create chances, but they don't convert. Do you mean that Steve Komphela must take off his suit and go convert those chances?" Ndlanya commented.

He added: "The strikers must take responsibility inside the box and at some point you need to be greedy. You need to be selfish sometimes and I think Chiefs players pass the ball even when they have an opportunity to shoot. I used to be ashamed if I went three months without scoring a goal."
