Boxing development event revisit Soweto

COMMITTED: Matchmaker Reuben Rasodi

Golden Gloves is not disconcerted that its boxing development programme, which named after its longest-serving matchmaker Reuben Rasodi, has failed to unearth talent.

Instead veteran promoter Rodney Berman still continues to stage the development tournaments in Soweto with the hope that it will dig up unpolished diamonds in the township that is known to have produced great fighters like Jacob Ntuli, Anthony Morodi, Enoch Nhlapho and Dingaan Thobela.

Berman goes back to Orlando Community Hall next to the famous stadium on Saturday. His matchmaker, Rasodi, has prepared eight bouts in six weight divisions for the seventh edition of a development tournament dubbed "Walala Wasala.

Rasodi has given Thabang Ramagole the opportunity to redeem himself after he sheepishly gave up in the fifth round against unheralded Mbulelo Nxazonke in November.

Ramagole went down from a body punch against the Nxazonke, who recorded only his fourth win in 17 fights. Ramagole, trained in Orlando by his father Lucky, was discovered through the same development programme. Cracks began to show when he was handed an undeserved draw in a fight he should have lost to Thabiso Moroosi in 2013.

Ramagole will face Moroosi again. Moroosi, a Free Stater, will want to regroup after he was stopped badly in the 11th round of his previous bout for the SA junior flyweight belt by Luyanda Mvula in December.

Another product of the same Rasodi Strongman series - Khatiso Hlahane, whose career has failed to take shape after such a positive start, will face Dizman Maholobela in the featherweight division.

Most eyes, however, will be fixed firmly on Percy Mkhize and Ronald Malindi - two former top amateurs - who remain undefeated after two bouts. Mkhize will fight Colin Tloubatla in the junior flyweight class, while Malindi will take on Jimmy Hamela in the bantamweight division.

Shaun Ness will headline the bill in a rematch with Ntuthuko Memela in the welterweight category. Memela returns after his most recent knockout defeat, his fourth, by Teerachai Kratingdaenggym on February 6 in Thailand.
