Apology, but Khune not out of woods

ITUMELENG Khune may have apologised for his Twitter outburst about match officials last week, but the Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper could still find himself in trouble with the Premier Soccer League.

The PSL announced yesterday that it had asked Khune to explain his angry tweets following his sending off in Chiefs' 1-0 win over AmaZulu last Thursday.

"[We have] written to [Khune], [asking him] to admit or deny certain comments attributed to him on social media [last week].

"The comments related to match officials appointed to officiate the Absa Premiership fixture between Chiefs and AmaZulu. Khune has been afforded five days to respond," the PSL said.

Following his two bookings inside a minute for time-wasting, which led to a sending off, Khune took to Twitter to bemoan the state of refereeing in the domestic game, directing his tweets at the official PSL account.

"It's unfair how we are painted bad for our actions on de field bt we are provoked by thse referees, you can cal me names but I stand 4 what's right," he tweeted.

In the other, Khune posted: "It's about time action is taken against this referees [sic] .... they've been very poor since beginning of the season."

The Bafana keeper faced a backlash, with some Twitter users reminding him he was wrong to waste time and react angrily to the first booking.

He seemed contrite the following day, writing: "To the football fraternity, my family, friends, teammates and fans: No words can validate my careless statements on social media. All I have now are apologies for my choice of words, which were not appropriate."

But the PSL could still haul him before its disciplinary committee, should he fail to "explain" himself adequately.

Khune will miss Chiefs' match at AmaTuks tonight, and next week's clash at home to Polokwane City.
