Pitso won't do favours for his 'buddy'

It will be Pitso Mosimane versus Steve Komphela on the Day of Reconciliation next month in the Telkom Knockout final.

Mosimane, one of the most successful black coaches in the PSL, would love to see Komphela winning a trophy and succeeding at Kaizer Chiefs, but certainly not when they meet in the final on December 16.

Mosimane's men booked a spot in the final in fine style, beating SuperSport United 3-1 at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday to set up a mouth-watering final against Chiefs.

Mosimane, a losing finalist twice in this competition when it was known as the Coca-Cola Cup [at SuperSport United], is just itching to win his third trophy since joining Sundowns.

"Steve is my buddy. I brought him to Bafana Bafana as my assistant. He has got brains. He is one of the local coaches that I believe needs to be given an opportunity. He has proved he is a good coach, getting to two finals," Mosimane said.

"I would like him to win a cup, but I have a responsibility. We can't give hand-outs. It's a bitter-sweet story," he added.

Leonardo Castro opened the scoring for Sundowns in the first 10 minutes, only for David Mathebula to spectacularly cancel out the goal three minutes later. However, Sundowns were too strong for Matsatsantsa, scoring two goals in the second period through defender Thabo Nthethe and hard-working midfielder Bongani Zungu.

Mosimane had thoroughly planned for SuperSport, making sure his players kept a close eye on SuperSport's dangerous striker Jeremy Brockie and midfielder Dean Furman.

"We've got clips on Brockie. We made sure we keep Brockie quiet because he hides behind the defenders. Thabo Nthethe did exceptional work there.

"But most importantly, we had to make sure that Dean Furman did not play. We applied a lot of pressure on him, not giving him time on the ball because he is a very good player and he distributes well."
