AmaKhosi show Dikwena more Stars

ANOTHER game, another win for Kaizer Chiefs, and another victory against Platinum Stars too, 2-0 in the Absa Premiership here last night.

This was the third meeting between these teams in a fortnight, after Chiefs saw Stars off 5-0 on aggregate over two legs in the MTN8 semifinals.

It is never easy to meet a team twice in a close space of time, let alone three times.

But Amakhosi engineered a win with metronomic efficiency to go to league and cup victory number seven, thanks to first-half goals from Reneilwe Letsholonyane in the 20th minute and George Lebese in the 33rd minute.

Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter brought right-back Siboniso Gaxa and striker Kingston Nkhatha back into his starting line-up.

For Dikwena mentor Allan Freese, his side's three defeats against the Soweto giants must reveal that the 10 to 15% of player power he has lost in Benson Mhlongo, Issa Sarr and Siphelele Mthembu could well be significant in a league as competitive as the Premier Soccer League.

Dikwena forward Mogakolodi Ngele was unable to return from national duty in Botswana in time for last night's match.

The visitors opened the scoring through a well-struck 20-metre goal by Reneilwe Letsholonyane.

The midfielder received the ball on the edge of the area just to the left, perfectly positioned for a right-footed drive, which Letsholonyane got power onto to beat goalkeeper Kabelo Dembe to the top-right corner.

Amakhosi made it 2-0 with another clinically taken goal, this time from left-winger Lebese.

Showing up in space on the right of the area, Lebese hit a crisp shot from a very tight angle past Dembe.

Amakhosi continued to pile the pressure on the exposed Dembe early in the second half.

George Maluleka's stunning left-footed drive was tipped for a corner by the Botswana keeper.

Then Letsholonyane's pass found Maluleka on the right, who shot onto the arm of well-spread Dembe.

Chiefs took their foot off the gas in the last 20 minutes, as Stars forward Lucky Nguzana headed Vuyo Mere's cross over the bar.

But Amakhosi finished strong again, Maluleka and Mulomowandau Ma-thoho both coming close.

l AmaZulu remained winless this season following their 2-0 defeat against Bloemfontein Celtic at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. The goals were scored by Musa Nyatama and Lerato Lamola in the first half.

It was Phunya SeleSele's first win of the season and they moved from 14th position on the log to ninth. Usuthu are now languishing at foot of the table.
