Lechesa gives Eagles wings

DUNCAN Lechesa is hoping to guide yet another National First Division club to the Absa Premiership, this time round Royal Eagles.

Eagles, officially launched at Moses Mabhida Stadium last Saturday, are owned by Durban millionaires Sbu and Shawn Mpisane.

After taking Polokwane City to the Premiership two seasons ago, Lechesa is convinced he has assembled an Eagles team good enough to challenge for promotion.

"We made some good signings during the off season, but we still have space for three more players," said the Eagles head coach yesterday.

"I need two strikers and a midfielder, then it will be a complete squad. We are negotiating with Orlando Pirates for some players; we hope to conclude the deal with them this week," Lechesa said without giving detail on which Pirates players he's eyeing.

But he was adamant he'll see Eagles into top flight.

"When I joined the club, the chairman [Sbu Mpisane] gave me a three-year mandate to get promotion. But I feel that's a long time.

"We are going to challenge for a promotion in our first year of existence. I have done it with Polokwane City before."

Eagles will start their NFD season with a home game against Baroka FC at Chatsworth Stadium on Friday night.

"Baroka FC have a good team; they did well last season in their first season in the NFD and almost qualified for the promotional play-offs," said Lechesa. "We want to start the season on a high note by winning our first game, but it is not going to be easy."
