Boca and Santos in KZN tourney

SOUTH American soccer clubs Boca Juniors and Santos are coming to South Africa to compete in an international development tournament.

Boca of Argentina and Santos of Brazil have confirmed their participation in the Durban Under-19 International Football Tournament from July 31 to August 9.

The tournament is organised by KwaZulu-Natal provincial government, eThekwini Municipality and the South African Football Association.

The Brazilian club have produced some of the greatest players in the world, including the legendary Pele and, more recently, Neymar.

Some of the big-name Boca Juniors graduates include Carlos Tevez, Fernando Gago and Nicolas Burdisso.

Eight clubs will take part in this tournament, described by Safa president Danny Jordaan as a great platform to expose local youngsters to international soccer.

Santos have been drawn in Group A with South African Under-19 team, Feyenoord of the Netherlands and English side Everton.

Boca Juniors are in Group B along with Italian side Roma, Benfica of Portugal and KwaZulu-Natal Academy XI.

"This is a great tournament that should be supported by all of us in the country. It will help expose our youngsters to international soccer," Jordaan said.

"They will also learn one or two things from their peers from across the world.

"The good thing is that they are playing against the best in the world, we are talking about clubs that have produced legends like Pele and Eusebio."

Jordaan, who is in Brazil for the World Cup, said they appreciated the support by KwaZulu-Natal government and eThekwini Municipality in helping them develop the beautiful game.
