ARROGANCE from certain individuals within Boxing South Africa (BSA) has caused taxpayers to fork out almost R4-million to fight promoter Branco Milenkovic over an issue that could have been sorted out over a cup of coffee.

That is how the straight-talking promoter described his recent court victory over BSA and its suspended chief executive officer Moffat Qithi.

Milenkovic was last week awarded damages after successfully suing BSA and Qithi for defamation. BSA and Qithi were ordered to pay Milenkovic R250000 apiece for comments made by Qithi. "I maintain that it was purely arrogance from people within Boxing SA which has cost taxpayers so much money. We could have sorted this out over a cup of coffee," Milenkovic said yesterday.

The money spent on fighting Milenkovic could have been used to upgrade around 30 boxing gyms in the rural areas or to stage many development boxing tournaments.

"I assume it is very easy for one to use taxpayers' money rather than pay from your own pocket," he said.

Milenkovic has another court action looming against BSA, this time over the ownership of television rights. He took BSA and public broadcaster SABC to court in 2012 to prevent the two parties from signing a broadcasting rights deal.
