NOT much separated the Sharks and the Lions before visiting fullback Lwazi Mvovo left an indelible and decisive mark on the Super Rugby contest at Ellis Park on Saturday.

Mvovo, who by some distance had carried the most menace in the Sharks attack, chipped and gathered in the 67th minute for a try that finally broke the Lions' back in the visitors' 25-12 win.

It reaffirmed the Sharks' spot at the top of the Super Rugby points table and gave director of rugby Jake White the opportunity to opine sagely about the Springbok wing he had moved to fullback.

"He is one of the quickest players in my team. He's got a left boot. He nearly scored the try of the year when he ran from behind his poles. I say week in and week out that Lwazi has been a sensation at fullback."

White went on to compare Mvovo's versatility to that of Corey Jane, Ben Smith, Gio Aplon and Willie le Roux.

Not far behind was the contribution of outside centre S'bura Sithole who pin-balled his way out of tackles.

"He made a leg tackle, got up, went hard at the ball, turned it over and Lwazi scored. Sithole made that try," said White.

His team was, however, in an almighty arm wrestle before Mvovo's telling intervention. The Lions defended doggedly but their defences were breached just a minute after captain Warren Whiteley departed the scene.

The Lions were full of fight but coach Johan Ackermann again blamed poor decision-making for his team's defeat.

"A bad decision by Alwyn [Hollenbach] to try and run out of halfway. The score was 15-12, we got turned over and obviously a brilliant try from Lwazi. It was [poor] decision-making in the end."
