Premier Skills initiative launched

THE English Premier League and the British Council in partnership with Safa yesterday launched the Premier Skills initiative in Johannesburg.

The event took place at the Pimville Nike Centre in Soweto. The skills development initiative will run until this Sunday.

Premier Skills uses football to develop a brighter future for young people around the world, drawing upon the global appeal of the Premier League. The course also includes partners from non-governmental organisations such as Grassroots Soccer, Sports for Social Change Network, Skills Share South Africa, Football Foundation SA, Girls and Football and the Boys and Girls Club.

The Premier Skills project is led by head coach Graham Robinson, a senior coach at Sunderland.

Throughout the week, 48 grassroots trainees will receive expert training from qualified coaches, giving them the skills and support to develop their own community football projects which also includes development as referees.

As of last year, Premier Skills has trained 2 300 coaches and referees in 21 countries across Asia, Africa and the Americas. It aims to train a further 3000 coaches and referees and through them reach more than 300000 young people.

Premier League CEO Richard Scudamore said: "At home the Premier League and our clubs have a long-held commitment and reputation for delivering high quality community and education programmes. Given our popularity, we felt it only right to take this approach to a wider community."
