Failure to qualify for Brazil riles Jordaan

NEW South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan could not hide his disdain at Bafana Bafana having failed to qualify for next year's World Cup in Brazil when delivering his address at Soccerex in Durban yesterday.

Last Saturday, Safa elected a new executive which is due to meet to discuss Bafana coach Gordon Igesund's future as well as all age-group national team coaches.

Bafana crashed out of the World Cup qualifying group stages, despite a 4-1 win over Botswana in Durban last month, putting Igesund in the firing line. Jordaan was, however, coy about discussing Igesund's future yesterday.

"It is not just about Igesund. We are not going to take a decision on [him] in isolation from all of the coaches and the total plan," Jordaan said.

"What is important is to make sure that we qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in 2015 and the Olympics in Rio in 2016 - which also brings into play the Under-23 coach, Shakes Mashaba."

Bafana's failure to qualify for Brazil 2014 has put the team in the footballing wilderness, but the road to redemption begins in Agadir next week when they face Morocco in an international friendly.

Jordaan also announced the latest grand plan meant to cure SA's development ills: a R70-million state-of-the-art football high-performance centre to be built in Durban next year.

The Hoy Park Sports Development Centre is modelled on Portugal's Sporting Lisbon Academy, which produced the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani and Luis Figo.
