THOMAS "Tommy Gun" Oosthuizen is still the golden boy for promoter Rodney Berman, Golden Gloves Promotions' spokesman Brian Mitchell said.

There was concern when Oosthuizen was left out of Berman's Triple Thunder bill that was announced on Tuesday. The tournament will take place at Emperors Palace of Dreams on August 31.

Berman raised eyebrows when he voiced his unhappiness about 25-year-old Oosthuizen's performance against American Brandon Gonzales on June 29.

Oosthuizen's drawn 10-rounder with Gonzales was attended by influential boxing writers as well as Home Box Office (HBO) head of boxing Kevin Nelson.

Berman's intention was to take Oosthuizen to American promoter Lou DiBella, who would then promote the reigning IBO super middleweight champion on HBO - the US's premier boxing broadcaster.

After Oosthuizen's US fight, Berman was quoted in his company's website as saying: ''Oosthuizen has always laid claim to belonging in the super middleweight division's elite, but on this form he's a long way off the top level.

''The likes of Carl Froch, Mikkel Kessler and Andre Ward would have him for breakfast. That's the harsh truth. He was lucky. He was gifted a draw - an outrageous slice of good fortune that he hardly deserved."

But Mitchell maintains that Oosthuizen is still Golden Gloves' top card.

''We can't write him off based on one poor performance. He is still the IBO champion and Golden Gloves' big draw card."

Mitchell said recently crowned WBC Silver cruiserweight king Ilunga Makabu will top the Triple Thunder bill with the defence of the title he won from Russian Dymtro Kucher at Salle des etoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco, two weeks ago.

Makabu, who is Oosthuizen's stable-mate, will fight American Eric "Danger" Fields.

Ryno ''Lion" Liebenberg will square up against Argentina's Gabriel Ramirez for the WBC's International silver belt at light-heavyweight, while Nkosinathi ''Mabere" Joyi will challenge Filipino Benezer Elolod for the WBC International junior flyweight title.

There will be a rematch between current national light-heavyweight holder Tshepang ''The Gentleman" Mohale and Johnny ''The Hurricane" Muller.
