AmaTuks not cowed by top dogs

UNIVERSITY of Pretoria are not carried away by their six-match unbeaten run in the Absa Premiership despite making their debut in top-flight soccer this season.

Lying second on the log behind in-form Kaizer Chiefs, AmaTuks are one of the four clubs who are yet to taste defeat since the start of the season in August.

The other three clubs are Chiefs, Free State Stars and SuperSport United.

AmaTuks started the season with a credible 1-1 draw against big spenders Maritzburg United, then went on to beat Golden Arrows 1-0, drew 0-0 with neighbours SuperSport United and upstaged Swallows 3-2.

Subsequent to that, AmaTuks played to a goalless draw with Platinum Stars and surprised many people by hammering Ajax Cape Town 5-1 in their own backyard this past weekend.

The club's defender and former South African Under-17, 20 and 23 captain Ramahlwe Mphahlele has attributed their success to laying a solid foundation during the pre-season.

"We have been doing well, I know we surprised a lot of people who were expecting us to be languishing at the bottom of the log after three or four matches.

"When the team gained promotion, the message was loud and clear - we are in the PSL to stay.

"It has been a trend in the past few years where clubs promoted to the PSL end up going back to the National First Division after only one season in the top league. It's not going to happen with us."

Guided by former Wits utility player Steve Barker, AmaTuks believe they have what it takes to sustaining their unbeaten run.

"Every game is important to us, we treat all of them like a cup final so that we do not lose focus," Barker said.

Commenting on Sunday's game against Orlando Pirates at Loftus Stadium, Mphahlele said: "It will be a tough one, Pirates are wounded after their weekend defeat by Celtic".
