Bucs to choose arbitrator soon

AN ARBITRATOR must still be found before the case against Orlando Pirates over violence at last year's Telkom Knockout is heard, but the South African Football Association, which is in charge of the legal process, is confident it will happen in the next fortnight.

The club will be given a choice of three possible arbitrators today, Safa's legal department said yesterday.

Pirates are seeking to overturn a suspended R250000 fine for supporter violence at last year's Telkom Knockout final in a year-old case that they have twice lost.

The club are questioning whether they should be held directly responsible for the actions of their fans - particularly at matches where they are not in control of the security operation, as was the case in the final against Wits last December.

Pirates' appeal has held up a further three cases of spectator violence against the club, who face heavy fines if they do not win arbitration . and maybe even more drastic sanctions like being forced to play some home matches behind closed doors. By challenging the interpretation of the rules, they are seeking to change a long-standing policy to charge clubs for their supporters' misbehaviour.
