Safa working on second Bafana friendly

THE South African Football Association (Safa) is still negotiating a second friendly for Bafana Bafana next month, but has not yet tied down a match.

For the moment, the national team have an away game against Poland in the provincial town of Bydgoszcz on Friday, October 12 but also the opportunity to play a second international four days later as per the Fifa coordinated calendar.

Sources said a game against Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, October 16 was being discussed, but not fixed. The possibility of playing at a neutral venue in Europe was on the table.

At first there were plans for a match in the Middle East on the way back from Poland, but then Safa decided it wanted to see if it could swap the date of October 16 with the PSL and move league fixtures from December forward so that there would be more time to have the Bafana squad in camp directly ahead of January's African Nations Cup finals.

But that idea was declared not workable and shelved last week.

Now Safa is running out of options. There are only three European countries available for a match on October 16 as the rest are in the throes of World Cup qualification but none of Armenia, Finland or Malta has the financial muscle to help offset the costs for Safa.
