Neeskens composed under fire

RESCUED : Sundowns coach Johan Neeskens
RESCUED : Sundowns coach Johan Neeskens

EVEN with the pressure mounting, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Johan Neeskens shows few signs of distress.

But behind the calm demeanour lies the fear that he might not see out his five-year deal with the Tshwane giants because of the team's poor results.

Just weeks into the season, Neeskens, who arrived more than a season ago, has several challenges, none greater than winning back the supporters.

Howls of discontentment and the ugly scenes when the team lost 2-1 to Maritzburg United recently, hardly suggest the Sundowns faithful are content with what they have been seeing.

Things could get worse for Neeskens should Sundowns fail to register a win away to Lamontville Golden Arrows at Moses Mabhida Stadium tomorrow, with kickoff at 6pm.

Inconsistency in selection appears to be to blame for the team's terrible start.

Neeskens has used as many as eight defenders - including Clayton Daniels, Abel Mabaso, Method Mwanjali, Wayne Arendse, Doctor Mampuru and Esrom Nyandoro - in the past six games.

Abafana Bes'thende are also under pressure, without a win after three games.

It might be early days, but talk of former coach Manqoba Mngqithi making a return to Arrows is fast gathering momentum as Muhsin Ertugral's position as the club's head coach is shaky.
