Magakwe wins race, but not fast enough

SOUTH African sprinter Simon Magakwe, pictured, won the 100m final at the Africa Athletics Championships in Benin.

Running against a slight headwind, he stopped the clock at 10.29sec, too slow for the second qualifying time he needs to make the South African team for the London Olympics.

Magakwe's fastest time this year is a 10.06 achieved in Johannesburg in April. The qualifying time for the Olympics is 10.18 and the deadline for achieving that is tomorrow.

Magakwe was the only South African in the final yesterday.
