THABISO "The Rock" Mchunu and Flo "The Black Panther" Simba will rumble again, but the first-round technical knockout decision that favoured Mchunu in their first meeting on June 16 still stands.
Their second clash will be an official semifinal bout of the Super 8 Last Man Standing boxing competition. It will take place at Emperors Palace on September 22.
That is the same date for the collision between Zack "The Black Warrior" Mwekassa and Danie Venter to decide who goes through to the final. Boxing SA said yesterday that the decision given by referee Tony Nyangiwe to Mchunu won't be reversed.
"It still stands on both boxers' fight records," said Boxing SA's director of operations Loyiso Mtya.
"BSA has ordered the two boxers to fight again and the decision was based on two facts. A lot of people, including some within BSA, felt that though Mchunu was on top at the time of the stoppage, it was not yet time to stop the fight because Simba still had his full senses.
"The second is that the interest raised by this match has actually made sure that the kind of marketing boxing needs is talking to the objectives of Boxing SA."
Simba's management protested against Nyangiwe's actions last week. Brian Mitchell and trainer Harold Volbrecht complained that the fight was stopped prematurely and that Nyangiwe's actions killed the interest that had been generated by the boxing series.
Mitchell doubles as spokesperson for Golden Gloves, who are the organisers of this three-legged boxing competition, which carries a whopping first prize of R500000. He said they were delighted that their charge had been given the opportunity to redeem himself, albeit at the expense of Johnny "The Hurricane" Muller, who was to meet Mchunu in the semifinal.
"We are taking Muller out of the competition and he will now challenge Tshepang Mohale for the SA light heavyweight title. Hekkie Budler will defend his IBO against Florante Tondes from the Philippines in the main bout," said Mitchell.
Muller proceeded to the semifinal via a walkover because his opponent Ran Nakash from Israel failed to make the weight.
