LOYISO Mtya returned to his roots in Mount Coke, near King William's Town in Eastern Cape, during the Easter weekend and donated boxing equipment that he hopes will be used to revive the sport in the village.

Mtya, director of operations at Boxing South Africa, made history by becoming the first boxer from rural South Africa to win a national title 34 years ago.

"This donation will ensure that fellow villagers will start engaging in boxing again," Mtya said.

"We want to have a community gym, which we believe will result in a fully fledged boxing gym.

"This is the community that brought me up and I am where I am today because of everyone in the village. This donation is a way of ploughing back to my village and thanking them for everything that they have done for me.

"I believe we will unearth raw talent who will go all the way and become world stars."

The handover ceremony for the donation of two punching bags, two sets of sparring gloves, four sets of bag gloves, four headguards, three sets of pads and a training bench was attended by world and South African champions - IBF minimumweight champion Nkosinathi Joyi, reigning IBF welterweight queen Noni Tenge, SA junior bantamweight king Miniyakhe Sityatha, featherweight champion Sabelo Jubatha and current national mini-flyweight champion Siviwe Ntsiko.

Mamali Productions boss Siphatho Handi, Eastern Cape Amateur Boxing Organisation president Vuyolomzi Mtekwana and Enothole Boxing Club chief trainer Boyboy Mpulampula also attended the event .

"Boyboy is going to conduct coaching clinics in Mount Coke in the next two weeks," said Mtya.
